Kies je favoriete Italiaanse rode wijn

De keuze in Italiaanse rode wijn is op zijn minst, nou ja, overweldigend. Er zijn honderden inheemse druivensoorten en vanaf de uitlopers van de Alpen tot in Puglia en Sicilië wordt er wijn van gemaakt. Je bent dus niet de enige die moeite heeft om te bepalen welke Italiaanse wijn het meest in de smaak valt.

Om de keuze eenvoudiger te maken vind je hieronder de belangrijkste druivensoorten en hun eigenschappen.

Sangiovese

De meest aangeplante druivensoort in Italië. Om de verwarring nog groter te maken worden er verschillende namen gebruikt voor Sangiovese. Bekend zijn Chianti en Brunello di Montalcino maar bijvoorbeeld ook Vino Nobile de Montepulciano (niet te verwarren met de Montepulciano druif). Sangiovese groeit overal in Italië en de wijnen zijn daarom ook zeer gevarieerd. Sangiovese uit Toscane bevat meer zwarte kersen en is rijker aan tannines, terwijl zuidelijke Sangiovese zachter is en lichter van smaak.

Montepulciano

Na Sangiovese de meest populaire druivensoort in Italië, maar desondanks nog relatief onbekend. Ook deze druif heet overal anders en ken je misschien ook wel als Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Rosso Conero of Rosso Piceno. Montepulciano heeft een diepe kleur, net als Syrah, en zit vrij hoog in de tannines. Veel wijnmakers blenden de wijn met andere druiven om de smaak zachter te maken. Montepulciano maakt unieke Italiaanse rode wijn. Naar verluid wordt er maar 100 hectare buiten Italië van verbouwd.

Barbera

Barbera is toonaangevend in de noordelijke regio Piemonte. Meer dan 60 procent van alle Barbera wijngaarden bevindt zich hier. Kenmerkend voor Barbera is de haast dropachtige smaak gecombineerd met kruiden, een fruitig zuurtje en zwarte kersen.

Nero d’Avola

Zeg je Nero d’Avola dan zeg je Sicilië. Bijna alle Nero d’Avola wijn komt hiervandaan. Een toegankelijke druif met veel fruit, in stijl soms verrassend vergelijkbaar met Shiraz en Cabernet Sauvignon.

Primitivo & Negroamaro

Primitivo is de Italiaanse naam voor Zinfandel, wat in feite een Kroatische druif is genaamd Tribidrag (leuke kennis voor een feestje). Primitivo is vaak samen met Negroamaro aangeplant in het zuiden van Italië. Het zijn lichtzoete, zeer fruitige en lichte Italiaanse rode wijnen die volzitten met de smaak van rijpe aardbeien, frambozen en bramen. Primitivo zorgt voor het fruit en Negroamaro voor de ‘body’ met donker fruit en structuur. Een goed stel dat vaak wordt geblend om de beste wijn te maken.

Valpolicella

Valpolicella is hier een vreemde eend, want het is eigenlijk geen druif maar een streek in Noord-Italië. De druiven die voor Valpolicella wijn worden gebruikt zijn typisch Corvina, Molinara en Rondinella. Valpolicella vind je in alle soorten, van de eenvoudige eetwijn Valpolicella Classico tot exclusieve Amarone wijn. Deze laatste wordt gemaakt door de druiven gedeeltelijk uit te drogen om de intensiteit te vergroten.

Dolcetto

Een Italiaanse rode wijn met een diepe kleur, vrij hoog in tannines en weinig zuur. Groeit vooral in Piemonte en Lombardije. Ook bekend als Dogliani, Dolcetto d’Alba, Dolcetto d’Ovada en Dolcetto di Diano d’Alba.

Nebbiolo

Heel bijzonder. Ook weer uit Piemonte en meteen de meest gerespecteerde druif aldaar ondanks de kleine schaal waarop Nebbiolo wordt verbouwd. Ter vergelijking: er wordt wereldwijd 50 keer meer Cabernet Sauvignon verbouwd dan Nebbiolo. Toch knap dat zo’n druif dan toch op de kaart staat. Nebbiolo uit warmere streken kan een hele uitdaging zijn, stoer, tannineus en met een hoge bewaarpotentie zoals het geval is met Barolo. En ook deze druif heeft meerdere namen: Barbaresco, Barolo, Valtellina, Roero, Ghemme en Gattinara.
